I’ve commissioned an expert to analyze the (accidental, and very problematic) ableism in my first novel, The Etiquette of Wolves.
I will publish that treatise here as soon as the project is finished.
In the meantime, I have published a blog post of my own concerning this topic, titled “Writing While Ableist,” which you can read here.
I have also touched on problems with my own ableism in blog posts here and here.
This topic of ableism in fiction and art continues to be one that matters a great deal to me. Subverting ableist stereotypes and tropes in my fiction is work I consider to be an ethical imperative, and future stories will do a much better job of countering ableism in my prose.
